20th Annual Great Lakes Research Consortium Conference
The Conference

The Great Lakes Research Consortium's annual conference provides New York and Ontario's Great Lakes researchers, students, agencies and advocates with a forum to discuss current research, academic programs, science, and policy. The conference includes student research presentations, a poster session, a plenary session on environmental economics and the Great Lakes, a networking reception, a dinner banquet and an awards luncheon for best student presentations.

Plenary Session:
Environmental Economics and the Great Lakes

Over recent years, Great Lakes ecosystem protection and restoration has been the focus of growing regional and national attention. While the environmental benefits of the restoration of the Great Lakes are very clear, less attention has been focused on the economic benefits. Yet, the Great Lakes provide an economic foundation for the surrounding region. As we move toward greater investment in ecosystem restoration, we have yet to address the question: what will be the return on investment?

Student Sessions

Oral presentations are grouped into various sessions on such topics as:

  • public policy analysis
  • limnology and ecology
  • environmental chemistry and toxicology
  • environmental engineering and modeling
Final session categories will be determined based on abstracts received. Oral presentations are 15 minutes each, followed by 5 minutes of questions/discussion. Students can present research results, research in progress, or research proposals and plans. Abstracts of no more than 200 words must be received by
March 1, 2010. All abstracts for oral or poster presentations must be submitted via e-mail to glrc@esf. edu.
For information about participation, call the GLRC at (315) 470-6720. Student presenters will receive free conference registration, which includes Friday's banquet and the awards luncheon on Saturday.

Don Rennie Memorial Luncheon & Outstanding Student Paper Awards

One student from each of the five sessions and the poster session will be selected for an award and a $100 cash prize in memory of Dr. Donald Rennie, former Vice President at the University of Buffalo and one of the founders of the GLRC. Awards are sponsored by New York Sea Grant.
